Collective development

concepts

pre-planning

personality traits to carry over from oneself

  1. calm and friendly
  2. ambitious but fussy
  3. intelligent and patient
  4. cheerful but mysterious
  5. sleepy but clever

content genre

  • video essays about art, especially films and tv shows
  • videos about character and fashion design
  • videos about character and story writing
i could also do top 10 lists/tier lists, speedpaints, music theory, fundamentals, y2k throwbacks, etc. i want to have variety

audience

determining this is harder than i thought.

i think in terms of age i'm going to aim for mid-gen z and older, though my demographic for my real ghostbusters videos usually leaned to late-gen x and older millennials, since rgb aired in the late 80s for a tv-y7 audience. a third of my audience is 35-44, and only 15% is 18-24. it wasn't exclusively them, of course, but it is the biggest age demographic. my vtuber era will likely skew to a millennial and gen z audience, since i'm expanding my range.

my gender demographic is currently around 3/5 male and 2/5 female, but again, depending on how this will go, it could change to a different ratio.

my country demographic is mostly north america and the uk, as well as the philippines. the us in particular is 43% of my demographic, because, again it's a ghostbusters channel.

how much do you want to act? do you want to be completely yourself, play a character, or somewhat inbetween?

something inbetween. something that makes me feel fake but not too fake. the rest of the characters will probably just be characters.

  • for playing a character straight up (selected for 2, 3, 4, and 5), look into unique concepts and anime character tropes
  • for something inbetween (selected for 1), look into unique concepts and contrasting concepts
  • for being completely yourself (not selected), look into complementary concepts and contrasting concepts

formula

(trait) + profession/aesthetic + species

  • only add a trait if you're playing a character or adding a quirk to your persona
  • if your species is human, you can leave it out of the formula
  • you may change your final line if it doesn't gramatically make sense
examples: (nerdy) magical girl cactus, (energetic) cowboy rabbit, (seductive) marine biologist, hydrangea explorer peacock

lay your concepts out

using the formula above, lay out three to five concepts for your characters

  1. first character
    1. (elegant) flight attendant robot
  2. second character
    1. (ambitious) artist human/cyborg/robot
    2. wandering robot
  3. third character
    1. (intelligent) gyaru fairy
  4. fourth character
    1. idol desktop buddy
    2. astrologist
  5. fifth character
    1. (ethereal) sleeping beauty cuttlefish
    2. (ethereal) dimension goddess
all of them are ageless/vague ages that can be changed to anything, besides (ambitious) artist human/cyborg, who is 19-22, and (ethereal) dimension goddess, who is thousands of years old. the rest of the character concepts’ ages rely on their story

lay your top 3 concepts and list the pros and cons of each concept

1: (elegant) flight attendant robot

pros: shows efficiency, precision, organization, and elegance. robot jokes galore. lore is already laid out for her, which i think is quite immersive.
cons: breaks in immersion can be major. the lore i have for her is that she's a robot stranded on an alien planet whose only past was manufactured by a space travel company. i do not want people to be upset.

2: (ambitious) artist human/cyborg/robot

pros: i can be more of myself, especially since she doesn't have lore yet. she's more of a show don't tell character. i also have a design for her and i love it.
cons: the character herself has flaws that could be seen as annoying. particularly, she's bad at taking and giving critiques. her lack of lore is also a huge flaw.

wanderer robot

pros: i don't have to change the design i have for her as much. it also opens opportunities for lore.
cons: she could be a copy of the first character and might have to be merged with her.

3: (intelligent) gyaru fairy

pros: i can experiment with new appearances and outfits. she is also experienced enough to know what she's talking about.
cons: i don't have the ethos of anything of substance to back her character up. also when i think of her i think of shin sato and elle woods instead of myself.

4: idol desktop buddy

pros: my original concept for the character was desktop buddy. i can go for a y2k/frutiger aero look for this character, too!
cons: she's way more extroverted and mean than me so i don't think i can write properly for her long term.

4: astrologist

pros: connected to character 1's story.
cons: revolved around character 1's story. i could just make her nyx.

5: (ethereal) sleeping beauty cuttlefish

pros: strong concept. strong anime trope personality that i can easily fit in.
cons: easy hornybait. i feel like i need a certain energy that i currently lack to portray her correctly. also, i don't know if i can make her being a vtuber work.

5: (ethereal) dimension goddess

pros: her overpowered abilities make her easily fit in with other vtubers. her dimension theme fits the kangaroos wiki as well.
cons: i have less ideas for lore for her than the first concept. also she can just be francis, but i'm using francis in the bloody choice game.

I'm a bit disappointed in the lack of blogs

I had four posts this month, but I stopped posting on June 9th. A bit disappointed.

Here are the updates!

The biggest news is: This is my first job! That's all I'll say about that.

I also opened up drawing requests again. I wanted to develop a new style for efficiency. It requires rending rather than lineart and flats, but flats are my least favorite part about drawing, so that's why I'm doing it anyways.

My VTuber is getting a backstory! And may split into five characters? The main one is a flight attendant robot named Carol. And then there's a scientist named Dr. Spica Urania. There is also an artist gyaru named Miki, a smart fairy named Luna, and a confusing dream entity named Seraphina. Their names are placeholders because I haven't found a place for them in the story yet. But I got the main story down, and some antagonists that appear in the middle of Carol's lore.

VTuber update thingy!

I got these designs down on my board!

I basically just started from scratch with the designs. The one on the right was basically my original plan, just a bit upgraded, and the one on the left is drastically different on purpose.

I was trying to get a cool vibe from the left one, and I nicknamed her Charlene. She's meant to look like an adolescent, but she's still an android. She is less robotic looking than the right character, possibly even indistinguishable from a human unless you look up close. "Well, actually she's a drawing" - 🤓💀

Here are some references I took inspiration from for her!

I cannot layer images properly.

The purple one is just Glaxxon 5000...

But with a girl's face. And hair. The name for the design is Francis. I did a few adjustments to the design besides the face, the picture shows a warmer suit than Glaxxon's, the jacket is cropped and the skirt is high-waisted. And she also wears earrings!

I don't know what to say about the design that I haven't said already to myself. Here is the inspo!

After a selection process of elimination, I think Francis will serve as the main outfit and Charlene will serve as the second!

I have like a thousand pins on my board for her, so I'm seeing which ones I like the least for her specifically and transferring them to other characters and boards.

My VTuber

Bio

Name: Carol (Samsa)

Role: Stewardess Android VTuber

Birthday: April 3 (Aries)

Species: Android

Age: "Ageless"

Created by: DOCILE Corporation

Company: Etoile Air (former), Roboreverie (current)

Backstory: Created as a flight attendant in the near future, she went rogue because she hated how the humans treated her. Like a slave. Like she wasn't able to get out. So, she left her airline company and became a VTuber to tell the humans how terrible they are. Her creators, her former passengers, everyone.

Created as flight attendants in the near future, the Carol units are the centerpiece of DOCILE Corp's Etoile Air. They are well-liked by passengers

Appearance

Skin/body: Pale skin. Two options: human-like face but robot body, or human-like face and body. For her body shape, it is probably something conventional. Mostly because the visible spine is weird 💀. Whatever it is, it depends on if I have replica skin or hard plastic skin. If it is a robot body, I was thinking of something based on the PAL Max, but I think I found something better: Spectra, the 1980s dolls known for their articulation and their metallic bodies. They are space-themed, I don't know if they're aliens or robots, or even magical girls, but I think the metallic body would be perfect for Carol.

Height: Between 5'10 and 6'2.

Hairstyle (front): Wispy or side-swept in some way. Could include a bang braid!

Hairstyle (side): Possibly long side parts, or none at all.

Hairstyle (back): Can't decide between 2A/2B wavy hair down, wavy side ponytail to the left, or braided bun. But one will be decided, and the other two will be alternate hairstyles. Pigtails will also be an alternate hairstyle.

Hair length: Medium-long or long.

Hair color: Iridescent/holographic. The main color is light pink, strawberry blonde, ash gray, or black. If not iridescent/holographic, it'd be black, maybe with bright iridescent streaks on the side. A hair color-swapping option is possible, but I haven't found which one to use for the main.

Hair shading: Dynamic, reacts to how the character moves. Semi-realistic, as I'm testing holographic light.

Eye shape: Tareme-shaped eyes. A bit like Osaka Shizuku's eye shape. Soft.

Irises: Can't choose the color of these four: colorful sky blue, sulking vampire red, dreamy vivid lavender, or iridescent chiffon pink. Big irises. Cartoon irises are usually smaller to enhance expression, but big eyes look a bit uncanny, perfect for Carol. Either pupil or highlight will be butterfly-shaped. Eye highlight is in the top middle, think Sangonomiya Kokomi. Eye physics! There's butterflies flying in her eyes, too! I got that idea from another VTuber though. Either that, or robot eyes like Kaizuka Inaho. Thick eyelash outline, with multiple tiny lashes, also with physics. Bottom eyelashes. "Natural", thick brows to fit classic or douyin looks.

Makeup: "Douyin" makeup. Identified by long lashes, eye contour, red blush, shiny red lipstick, natural brows, and body shimmer. Could have shiny eye makeup. Body shimmer probably depends on the robot/human or humany body, or the type of outfit.

Overall: Soft, doll look. Classic or soft dramatic essence. Audrey Hepburn but kawaii, especially if you go for a braided black bun. Or a futuristic Barbie, especially if you go for a blonde side-ponytail.

Clothing

Suit: My silhouette for a suit is pretty clear. Black or dark blue blazer and pencil skirt paired with white collar shirt and purple neckscarf. But the details are a bit less clear. If you don't want a skirt, use pants for dominance. Under the blazer is an iridescent vest with cornflower/lavender as the main color. White gloves are optional.

Neckscarf: My first idea for the pattern is identical to Glaxxon's: Purple with orange and white outline. The second is purple with just white outline, lavender stars, and then a white star on the middle.

Badges: Airline wings pin and nametag, both iridescent/holographic. I found a design for the airline company that I like but I stole it from a stock logo.

Dress: I also have an idea for a dress. Two. My first is a regular indigo dress. Sleeveless. Similar to Tour Guide Barbie. The second is a purple dress that is dark purple on one side and lilac on the other. Could have some sort of flowers by the hip. Off-shoulder sleeves.

Stockings: I got so many ideas... my first is none at all. Just robot or human legs. My second is an asymmetrical cyan stocking on the left leg only. My third is two asymmetrical dark brown socks. The right would be half-calf, the left would be tight-length. My third is dark purple tights, one with hot pink outline and the word "ROBOREVERIE". The fourth is regular dark brown or black tights.

Shoes: Black heels. Purple butterfly pattern on the bottom. That is clear. Possibly with a strap, and that strap could have a butterfly chain. If no black heels, then she'd have robot feet.

Head accessories: A big, simple, butterfly-shaped hair accessory. If you choose the ponytail, it could act as a ponytail band. If you choose Maybe child-like Y2K flower/butterfly/star barrettes. Possible asymmetrical earring, either butterfly, or less likely diamond or rectangle. Right ear. She has an alternate option for butterfly-shaped shield glasses. The color depends on the color of the hair. If it's black, then iridescent. If it's blonde or pink, maybe dark purple.

Acessories (for dress): If not flowers blooming on the dress, maybe a butterfly belt will do. There can also be a glove that cover only the middle finger.

Other ideas

- An art style mixing anime, sketchiness, and impressionist art.

- Default pose is symmetrical, but also has an asymmetrical hip pose, and a walking pose.

- Flowy joints when moving, exaggerated to give the effect she's not human (Not sure about this one)

- Comic tones?

- Throughout my time on YouTube, I noticed a huge similarity between VTubers and old-school AVGN/Nostalgia Critic clones: many of them have extensive lore within their personas. Both of them embrace geek culture in different ways, the reviewers join their favorite characters in the war against the Time Elf, VTubers are the Time Elf themselves. They aren't afraid to be cringey or silly because they're doing what they love.

- Absolutely not going with this because my personal style is different, but what if she was created to resemble AI art? AI art usually has a very recognizable style. There was a recent controversy where someone was giving away 2 VTuber models that would regularly be $15. Why $15? Because they were poorly prepared AI-generated models.

- My reference sheet will have front, back, and side views. It will also have the hair colored differently to separate the hair into different parts. It will probably have the two alt hairstyles as well.

Hints at what my VTuber will look like (and my opinion on AI Art)

AI Art, in my opinion, is like a combination of NFTs and (non-studious) traced art. NFT art because it's generated, it steals from real artists, you can sell it on OpenSea (usually), and 30-year-old techbros think it's the best thing ever. But it's also like tracing because it also steals from artists and takes no effort at all, but people say that it did because they worked on it for so long.

Have you heard of the AI Art that won a state fair?

It wasn't even an AI art contest, it was a state fair!
Very, very weird.

But at the same time, I feel like a tweet that goes like this:
"AI Art defenders be like 'yeah I know that the art is not created by me, it steals from every artist in the world, and I should really be spending money on actual artists and photographers that I like but look at the funny trailcam meme'"

Besides the morally ethical stuff and the NFT stuff, I guess the only flaw is that Midjourney is really bad at making anime art.

There's the hint about the VTuber!
